I am so excited to share my latest fashion adventure (I'm so new to the blog scene, it's all an adventure, and I LOVE every minute of it)! I was able to attend the fall luncheon for Fashion Group International's San Antonio Chapter (FGI SA). It was a beautiful event at The Broadway with some of the nicest (and, of course, best dressed) ladies! As silly as it sounds, I definitely started feeling nervous while driving to the event (stopping for coffee probably didn't help my jittery nerves, LOL). Yesterday morning I spent longer getting dressed than I did the first days of class. I even decided to stall before going in, by sitting in my car and snapchatting. I was convinced that being 3 minutes early (I know, I impressed myself) would make me the first person at the event (what? silly!), and that would invariably make me the lamest. Because the saying is FASHIONABLY late. Of course, this plan was foiled by the courtesy valet offered at the event venue (the best laid plans...). I was SOOOOO relieved when I walked into the luncheon and saw over a dozen ladies already mingling.
Side Note: I pray my baby, JT, doesn't inherit my propensity for the dramatic!
All this to say, my nerves were instantly assuaged when I walked in and was greeted by the two beautiful ladies at the check-in table, both volunteers with FGI SA. After checking in I recognized several faces from a blogger-focused client event I helped coordinate over the summer (as well as the face of one of my high school teachers, now extremely successful in her second career as a fashion blogger/editor of SA Woman, Pam Lutrell). It felt very strange to be a participant at this event, instead of helping to coordinate. Strange, but also great! It was also a bit odd (creeper-ish?) to be at a real life event with so many bloggers that I follow on social media (my thoughts included: "Can I tell this lady that I saw the snaps of her new puppy and he is SO CUTE IT MAKES MY HEART HURT!? Probably not..."). It was wonderful to chat with Aquila of Haute in Texas and better connect with another #TallGirl, Byrdie from BSoFly!
The luncheon was set up as a panel forum with multiple questions about social media & video and how it all affects fashion and shopping trends. Their advice included 1) never buy followers 2) don't allow brand sponsors to script your content: authenticity is key and 3) don't rely on your online followers for self-esteem. That third tip really resonated with me. Marnie Goldberg (YouTube vlogger and online influencer), shared with all of the ladies a great tip she heard online once: Don't give any mind to the haters, they don't know you. But on the flipside, don't allow your unknown online fans to inflate your ego. Listen to and take criticism from your friends and family IRL. Allow your offline support system to be your baseline and let the rest fall away. I almost threw up a #HallelujahHands emoji on that one!
And the fashion? The trends I was lapping up were: bomber jackets and booties. I love the sporty edge a bomber jacket can add to an otherwise feminine look. And who doesn't enjoy a great bootie?? A: crazy people. They are so cute and have definitely helped my personal wardrobe transition into fall. Basically the luncheon was a huge success: I learned, I lunched, I networked and am now feeling unstoppable! Onwards and upwards my loves!
